The odds are against you!

by Mark Hammons 2007-10-16, 23 people found this review helpful
I found Hoyle's Casino 2008 to be bland and lackluster. While the bug in the Craps game (as mentioned by many in the 2007 version) has been fixed, the game itself is simply dull. A casino game should engage the player, and at least try to simulate the thrill of the games found in Las Vegas. Hoyle has managed to keep the look and feel of a 1990s era software program, and doesn't come close to competing with the 2001 release of Bicycle's Casino ver 2. What is missing in this package is the feeling that the games exist in a connected environment. Instead, the clunky menus that take you from game to game constantly remind you that you're playing a $20 computer game. Come on Hoyle, let's step it up. It's time to shed the ghost of Sierra and come up with something more original.

Fun games, but dated looks

by Ryan Leonard 2008-04-16, 12 people found this review helpful
I downloaded the full-featured 60-minute demo from Hoyle's own website and loved it, so I came here to buy the real thing. Great selection of games: all the table games, good variety of slots, video slots, and video poker (including multi-hand poker), even mechanical horse racing!

On the downside, the appearance and interface IS very dated. Everything works smoothly, though, and all the game play is here that you'd expect from a trip to a casino. Casual computer gamers and casino regulars will have a ball with this.

Something to keep in mind: This game comes on a DVD-ROM. Some people with older computers are fully capable of running this game, but you may not have a DVD-ROM drive. In that case, you can buy & download this game direct from Hoyle's website.

Sobering and Challenging

by Jefferson T. Packer 2008-08-04, 11 people found this review helpful
If you've never been in a real casino and have visions of sitting down at the Blackjack table and making incredibly gutsy calls like James Bond and winning huge money while some stacked blonde gets her panties in a wad leaning on your shoulder, this game will expose you to the reality of casino gaming without bankrupting you.

The first mind-blowing fact in this game is how easy it is to utterly destroy your original stake of $5000 chasing after that elusive "big win." The truth about casino gaming is that, to win big, you have to bet big, and betting big is something that a poor schmuck with just a measly $5000 can NOT afford to do in Vegas, Monte Carlo, Atlantic City or anywhere else.

The second thing you will learn in Hoyle Casino is that emerging from a casino with more money than you walked in with is something close to a miracle, and it will require a combination of luck and iron-willed self-discipline from you. Think about it, folks - you don't build a place like Caesar's Palace or Wynn Las Vegas because your company has a history of LOSING money. The casino business is probably second only to petroleum in having a fool-proof system for fleecing its customers and sending them home in a barrel. If you are going into a casino to be entertained, great. Have some drinks, and make sure to leave your ATM card in the hotel room.

On the other hand, if you are going into a casino with the goal of beating the house by ANY amount, (much less by a significant one,) you will have to be smart, educated and lucky. The smart comes from birth and life, the luck comes from... who knows? But the education comes from right here. Read the manual VERY carefully where the games you are interested in are concerned, then practice, practice, practice.

Hoyle Casino is a GREAT place to learn the hard knowledge you will want to have before you even dream of walking into the den of wolves that the real-life casino most absolutely is, and if you take to heart the hard lessons that Hoyle Casino can teach, you might have a chance of coming out ahead in Vegas.

JUST LIKE BEING IN A CASINO!

by Donna J. Gibson 2008-01-19, 4 people found this review helpful
this software game is pure fun and you really feel as though you are in a casino (without spending the $) they even give you Bnkroll of money to use so it's just not like collecting "points" or something, really feels like the real thing LOL. i would recommend this to anyone who wants the feel of a casino in the privacy of their own home. the slots are very realistic too, they even show you the one next to you as you would see in the "real" casinos. it's just pure fun. blackjack and keno are also very realistic too, especially with the soft music playing in the background and animation of the casino rooms. very well done. i love it.

The best game to-date

by E. Hutcheson 2008-05-15, 6 people found this review helpful
I usual don't play much games, but this casino game is the best one yet. I have hours of fun, playing a variety of casino games. Its real life animations are great, you feel like your actual in the casino. The game has a tutorial that helps you along the way, so you can learn about the game as you play. I am impress with the way the characters look and sound so real and their comments are so funny at times. I really enjoy playing and hope that whoever sees this review would get one. The best thing about this is that you can play as long as you like, bet as much as your (pretend) credit card allows and you don't have to suffer and true life consequences. Thank you Hoyle board casino games.

Finally Compatible with Mac OS X

by R. Korte 2007-10-09, 10 people found this review helpful
I've loved the Hoyle game series (Card Games, Casino, and Puzzle & Board Games)for many years. But, the last Mac versions were released in 2002 and were only compatible with OS 9. These older versions were still playable on pre-Intel Macs, but the newer Macs with Intel chips no longer have compatibility with pre-Mac OS X software.

Finally, the long wait is over and new versions of the excellent Hoyle Games are available for today's Mac users! :-)

Fun for casual gamer

My husband bought Hoyle Casino for the tutorials it offers for each game. I have since become addicted to playing blackjack and creating new characters with the face creator. All in all, a great way to kill time.

worth the cost

Hoyle Casino 2008
I have been playing Hoyle Games for a long while. Each year they add new stuff. This time around they added Video Slots-a game I have been curious about since seeing them in actual casinos.
I am very satisfied with the quality and completeness of these games. I spent quite a bit of my time playing them and enjoy it.

Great, fun, good practice for the real thing !!

Fun Games. Never Get Bored!

by C. Still 2008-01-07, 3 people found this review helpful
I purchased this as a gift for my 63 year old mom for Christmas, along with the Hoyle Card Games 2008, because she is always looking to learn how to play new casino games and she is totally hooked on solitaire. She is not very PC savvy, but learned how to play the games pretty quickly. The help that comes along with the game is useful but may need some interpretation if you don't know the game basics. Overall, it was a very good purchase.
